The Healing Crisis

Reflexology activates the body’s own healing power, so some form of reaction is inevitable as the body rids itself of toxins.  This is referred to as the “healing crisis” and is a cleansing process.  The severity of reactions depends on the degree of imbalance, but should never be too radical.  The most common phrase following a first treatment is, “I have never slept so well!”

Most common reactions are related to the body cleansing itself of toxins, as they manifest in the eliminating systems of the body - the kidneys, bowels, skin and lungs.  The following reactions are not generally unusual, the client may experience some, none or all of the following:

Positive Effects

[      Increased energy.

[      Relaxed.

[      Calmer.

[      Less emotional.

[      Sleep well.

[      Sense of well-being.

[      Much better mood.

[      Relief from pain.

[      Joints appear more mobile.

[      In the case of respiratory tract infections, mucopurulent (yellow or greenish) sputum becomes clear.

Other Effects

[      Headache.

[      Tiredness.

[      Dizziness.

[      More emotional.

[      Nausea.

[      Bowel/Bladder changes.

[      Old symptoms may re-occur, e.g. Rashes.

[      Symptoms may be slightly exacerbated for 24 hours (this indicates that the treatment is working.

[      Skin rashes.

[      General aches and pains the following day after treatment.

[      Spots or pimples.

[      Great fatigue for approximately 48 hours.

[      Flu-like symptoms.

[      Increased wind or flatulence.

[      In women, menstrual blood becomes redder, and usually more profuse.

Also the presenting condition may temporarily worsen before it starts to improve.

The diagram below, explains how the body may react or respond to reflexology in respect of the release of toxins.

These reactions are not a cause for worry as it is a positive sign that the therapy is working.  Always note down any reactions and inform your therapist at the next session.

Whatever the reactions, they are a necessary part of the healing process and will pass.  In order to counteract some of the effects of treatment, the following advice is given:

[      Drink plenty of water to help flush toxins.

[      Only eat a light meal.

[      Relax and avoid over-exertion.

[      Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.  These all dehydrate.  Water is better, preferably warm or boiled.
